Sunday Social (on Wednesday) ~ Kickin' it Old School

In honor of Back-to-School, and me moving back to my childhood hometown, I thought I would join in on the Sunday Social link up this week. The topic takes us all the way back to high school for Kickin' it Old School.

1. What were you like in Middle School/High School?

I was a normal girl trying to be in the popular group. I had been doing that all through elementary school and it carried on through high school. I was always trying to fit in. And, although I was accepted as one of the "populars", I always felt like I had to work at it. Looking back, I should have just accepted myself for who I was and been friends with the girls I am still friends with today. I have only kept in touch with the "populars" when we have class reunions. Otherwise, I really don't know what they are doing.

In Middle School (junior high), I was a cheerleader. In High School, I was Class President, on the pom pon squad, in Drama, and in National Honor Society.

2. What were your favorite past times?

In Middle School, I spent almost every Friday night at one of my friends' house. We watched old movies and baked, and listened to the radio. When we got in High School and got boyfriends, we stopped all that. My time was spent with my high school boyfriend, going to parties on the weekends. We were always doing what we shouldn't have been doing, although pretty harmless. There's not much to do in a small town.

3. What songs were you obsessed with?

This was the time of the 1980's hair bands. I loved anything by Poison, Warrant, Quiet Riot, Guns 'N Roses, Motley Crue, etc. I also LOVED the twin band Nelson. If it had an electric guitar solo, I was in love. Also, those '80s love ballads ... oh my.

4. What fashion statement do you look back on and cringe?

I would have to say parachute pants, and my Mork from Ork suspendered pants (although that was more like elementary school). Other than that, it was the '80s, baby, and fashion was at it's BEST! Tight-rolled jeans, jeans tucked into your layered socks, large fish-hook earrings, shoulder pads, real color blocking, jean skirts, flats, jean jackets. Ahhhh .....

5. Who was your celeb crush?

Gunnar Nelson from the band, Nelson. Tom Cruise was on the radar of every girl at that time. And I had a thing for John Elway (good Lord, what was I thinking ... can you say "horse teeth"??). And, I am old enough that I was in love with Kevin Costner and Mel Gibson. I'm still in love with Kevin Costner.

6. What were your favorite TV Shows/Movies?

I liked old black and white movies in Middle School. Any movies with the Brat Pack: Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Molly Ringwald, Mare Winningham, Anthony Michael Hall, Andrew McCarthy. A fave was certainly Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club. Tom Cruise was also big in All the Right Moves, Risky Business, and Top Gun (yowzer!) That was, obviously, before he became a freak. I also watched lots of TV. Beverly Hills 90210 and Melrose Place (although that was at the end of high school). We watched a lot of sitcoms: Roseanne, The Simpsons, lots of reruns on syndication like Good Times and Who's the Boss. Our favorites, though, were the primetime soaps like Dynasty, Dallas, Falcon Crest, and Knot's Landing. We were big family TV watchers.

Take yourself back to high school and link up at Some Days are Just: A Complete Waste of Makeup. Come on, you know you want to!
