Future Queen

This weekend it is Septemberfest in our town. There is a carnival, a parade, music every night, and lots of fun festivities.

Brynne decided that she wanted to run for Junior Miss Septemberfest. She's pretty shy in situations like this, so I was happy that she wanted to step out of her comfort zone and participate.

We bought her a pretty new dress, fixed her hair, and painted her fingers and toes. She looked so sweet.

Her age category had 10 girls and the age span was 7 to 11. We knew that her winning was a real long shot, just because of her shyness and her age. She didn't really care if she won or not. She just wanted to try.

Being interviewed by the judges

At the crowning ceremony, waiting for the announcement of the winners

Unfortunately, she didn't win. But, she got a yummy goody bag and gets to ride in the parade on Saturday. She told me that she didn't care about the crown (although she did admit that she almost cried when she didn't win), she just wants to ride in that parade!

Eli, on the other hand, sobbed when she lost. He was crushed. After he was able to pull himself together he said, "Well, if she doesn't have a crown, then I can call her 'Future Queen'". That's right.

And, in our book, she was a winner anyway. She was so big and brave and well behaved. She answered the judges' questions and did everything she was supposed to do. I was VERY proud of her.

And she wants to give it a try again next year.

Long live the {Future} Queen.

True Desires

"Delight yourself in the Lord
and he will give you the desires of your heart."
~ Psalm 37:4

Do you get discouraged because God doesn't live up to His promise of giving you the desires of your head?

Yeah, you read that right.

I realized, during some reflection this morning, that often I have extreme desires of my head ... things that I think I really, really want. But I mistake them for desires of my heart. And then I am frustrated because God doesn't give them to me, when He promises that He will.

Our move is one of those instances.

For the past several years, I have desired so strongly to move away from Oklahoma and move closer to my family. I never considered moving back to my hometown. It never entered my radar.

My desire was to be closer to my family, more like an hour drive instead of four hours. I wanted to be able to see my grandma more often. I wanted to be able to see my aunt more often, who had recently moved further away. I wanted to be able to continue to build a relationship with my sister, and regularly love on my nieces. I wanted the kids to experience extended family. I wanted a more simple life. I didn't want to be around snobby rich (acting) people anymore. I wanted to be able to walk or ride my bike to places. I wanted more community involvement. I wanted to fit in.

Rick and I tried several times to make a move. Nothing ever worked out.

I was frustrated. I was discouraged. I just didn't understand ...

but You said You would give me the desires of my heart!

But God knew that these were desires of my head. I didn't really know what the desires of my heart were. My head is not there. Only God knows what's going on in my heart.

And he made it happen.

It was not until we moved to my little hometown in Missouri, four blocks away from my parents, down the road from my grandma, in the path of my aunt's drive on her way to work, actually fighting with my sister over the last no-bake cookies, seeing my nieces several times a week, watching one of them play sports, the kids seeing their grandparents and other family members every single day when they pop in for a visit or when we pop in for one with them.

I didn't know that the "simple life" would actually mean that I was busy all the time. But my busyness is doing things that are meaningful .. not only to myself, but to others.

I had to realize that coming to a small town with many people who are on state assistance and disability benefits, with lots of elderly folks, and a large Amish community, could mean that I was the rich (acting) snobby one. I would need to remember that we are a community, regardless of our status in it.

I didn't realize how fulfilling it would be to walk or bike everywhere, to be involved in community events.

I learned that this is where I always belonged .. where I fit in.

I didn't know it. But God did.

I am delighted.

Nicole's Daybook

Outside my window... is a yard full of leaves that fell out of our huge oak tree after the rains Saturday and Sunday. The negative to those big elm and oak trees? All that raking. The positive? Jumping in those big, colorful, piles of leaves when we are done. The kids are gonna love that!

I am thinking... about how my days have been filled with helping others who need me.

I am thankful ... that my grandma and I have gotten so close these past couple of weeks. We have developed a really special bond that we haven't had in years.

I am wearing... a Nike t-shirt, black capri sweats, and tennis shoes. Just got done walking.

I am planning...  to enjoy our weekend with Rick! He is coming for Labor Day Weekend, and it's Septemberfest here, so there will be lots of festivities.

I am creating... a cozy, comfortable home and family life.

I am going... to start painting my kitchen cabinets today. My mom, aunt, and I are painting them black.

I am reading... The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd.

I am hoping... that my grandma's infections get cleared up so she can have some relief from the extreme ups and downs.

From the learning rooms... Things are going great! We are in a good schedule during the day that allows us plenty of work and play time. The kids, as usual, are astounding me with their knowledge. Our favorite subject right now is Bible. The kids are loving our program where they draw stick figure pictures to help them remember Bible verses. We are doing lots and lots of reading, both together and independently. Dawson is still doing good at school, also. He has made some friends and has plans to hang out with them on Friday night.

Noticing that ...  Brynne and I have both lost weight, just because of all of the exercise we are getting.

From the kitchen... Having some family favorites this week. Tonight it's Chicken and Dumplings for Dawson.

Around the house...  Everything is unpacked and put away! ... until this weekend when Rick will bring another load.

One of my favorite things... is the t.v. show Chopped on the Food Network. Do you ever watch that? It's a family favorite. Eli and Brynne play Chopped in the kitchen.

A few plans for the rest of the week... Tonight we are going to watch my niece play volleyball. Kyndal will be here because we are playing her school. Tomorrow night my friend Angela and her two sons are coming over for dinner and hangout time. On Thursday night Brynne is running for Miss Junior Septemberfest, and Rick will be here! We haven't seen him in almost two weeks! On Friday we are going to take the kids to the carnival uptown. On Saturday Rick and I are helping at our Sunday School class' luncheon (oh yeah, honey, I signed us up for something!) and going to the parade. On Sunday we might go down to my parents' lakehouse after church. We'll have family dinner at my parents' on Monday, and then Rick will have to go home. :(  As you can see, our life here is busy!

Double Duty: Weekend Wrap-up and Menu Plan Monday

I was so looking forward to this weekend. I had great plans to get some projects done and the house cleaned. And now it's over. And it went by quick! I did quite a bit done, though.

My grandma was re-hospitalized on Thursday. She was in bad shape! I left her on Wednesday night at the home in great condition. When I went to see her on Thursday, she was on oxygen and could hardly stay awake. She had so much swelling in her legs that one had red streaks. Right after I got home the nurse called me and said that she had called the doctor and he wanted her hospitalized. We changed hospitals. On Friday she was completely out of her mind, and mad! She had a really bad day! I had plans to go visit her on Saturday.

I got up on Saturday morning, slowly ... and then gathered up everything I needed for a day away. I had several errands to run. I went to a town 30 miles away and got a library card for their regional library. I have a great story about that for later this week.

Then I went to see my grandma. And she was doing SO WELL! She was sitting in a recliner. Her arm, that has been causing all the problems, looked so much better! And the swelling was way down. The only problem was that she had some splitting in her leg and it was very painful. She has cellulitis in it, and it's going to take quite a bit of time to heal. Hopefully she will be coming back to the home this week. She is ready to get back to all her friends.

After our visit, I made stops at Gamestop (for Dawson), JC Penney, Lowe's, Aldi, and Wal-Mart, grabbed some pizza, and headed home.

On Sunday, the kids and I went to my childhood church for the first time. Oh, to be home! I loved every minute, and so did the kids. Brynne was ecstatic. She made a new friend first thing. Eli and Brynne even went forward for children's time during church, and tried to sing sings they didn't even know. They had a ball.

We came home in the afternoon and I did some organizing, some laundry, vacuumed, dusted, cleaned the bathroom, mopped the floors and did laundry (all in about 2 hours ... top to bottom). Then I made a custom bulletin board to hang above my desk, and organized my desk area. I think it looks great! (I still have some things to do in this area, but for now it is perfect for what I need.)

Dawson and I went to a visitation for my good friend's father who died suddenly this week. She and her two sons reached out to us when we moved back and have been great friends to us. He was the father of five children, 17 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. What a legacy!

Then we went to my parents' for Sunday evening dinner. My sister was there with the baby. I am going to LOVE our Sunday family dinners. My dad makes rockin' fried chicken!

We came home and watched an episode of Cupcake Wars, and then everybody went to bed. I sat in bed and did lesson plans for this week. It was a productive weekend, and I felt ready to tackle another week.

And here's what we are having for dinner this week ...

Monday ~ Calzones

Tuesday ~ Beef and fish tacos

Wednesday ~ Fend for Yourself

Thursday ~ Chicken and dumplings

Friday ~ Beef stroganoff

Saturday ~Jalapeno chicken enchiladas

Sunday ~ Goulash

Rick will be here this weekend, so I am making all of his favorites! Poor guy hasn't had a home-cooked meal in two weeks. I'm gonna fatten him up!

Hello Morning!

One thing that really keeps me ticking is a good morning routine. I know that I know that I know that my whole day goes more smoothly (both with my attitude and productivity level) when I start my day off right. That includes quiet/devotion/journaling time, exercise, and routine.

I have been working on this new morning schedule this week:

1. Quiet/Devotion/Journaling Time.

Dawson gets up for school at 6:30 a.m., so I am getting up at that time, too. While he is showering, I sit in my chair with my cup of coffee and read my devotion pages (Stepping Heavenward by E. Prentiss) and Bible verses (right now, two chapters of Proverbs). I do my prayer time, making sure to pray for Rick according to my 31 Days of Praying for Your Husband bookmark.

I have been journaling for YEARS, off and on. I love to journal, and I love that I have all my journals (or most of them). I have started journaling again, ending my morning time with it. There are so many important events going on right now that I don't want to forget them.

2. Exercise.

Once Dawson is ready I drive him over to my parents' to wait for his ride to school, who is a friend of my niece's. We all sit on their front porch and drink coffee and talk until they go to school.

Then I scoot home to wait for my mom and her friend, Brenda, to come by on their bikes to pick me up. We ride the several blocks to the city park, park our bikes, and then briskly walk three miles. Then we ride back home (uphill most of the way ... ouch!)

Having accountability in exercise is so key for me, and it makes the time go by so much faster to have someone(s) to talk to. Believe me, my mom is persistent. If I wasn't outside waiting, she would come in to get me. So, I might as well get up and be happy about it!! And, I'm not letting those "old ladies" make me look bad!

3. Daily Routine.

When I get home, I grab another cup of coffee and hop into the shower. While Eli and Brynne are eating breakfast and waking up (and usually playing the iPad), I get ready for the day. While they are getting on their clothes, brushing teeth, and fixing hair, I get out our school books and supplies and get us ready for our school day.

We start school at 10:00 a.m. In the mornings we do Bible, Grammar, Spelling, Writing, and Math. Then we break for lunch. This is when I will try to run out and see my grandma for a bit. (BTW ... my grandma has now been readmitted to another hospital. Although mentally she was fine, she was in horrible physical shape today. She has fluid built up all inside her body and is in a lot of pain. They are running every possible test on her trying to find out what is going on. Please pray for her.)

After lunch, we do our unit study, read, and have our P.E. lessons.

At 3:00 p.m., I go to pick up Dawson from school and the kids start playing. Then we just spend our evening doing a little housework, playing, reading, doing house projects, eating dinner and getting settled down for bed. We have really enjoyed meeting up with my mom to take the dogs for a walk, and/or stopping by the Dairy Queen for a treat or visiting Grandma and Papa for a bit.

The kids turn in at about 8:30 p.m. And about that same time, I hit the couch for some t.v. and internet time. I have been exhausted by this time, so I am ready for bed by 10:00.

It's a full day, that's for sure. But by starting my day off on the right foot, and staying on somewhat of a schedule, the days are turning out to be great.

If you would like some help getting yourself into a good morning routine, you can download a free E-book from Inspired to Action called "Maximize your Mornings". I haven't actually read this, but thought I would pass it along to you if you would like it.

Timing

I have moved home just in time. My grandma really needs me. As you may recall, she is in a nursing home in our town. She has been really sick from an infection in her arm, and it has affected her mind. She feels like the nurses and staff are out to "get her", so she won't take her medications, eat, or sleep in her bed. It's been really hard on her, the staff, and my mom.

I finally went out today to try to reason with her. She didn't recognize me when I got there. She was scared. I was finally able to get through to her and get her to take her medication. I convinced her that she needs to eat, and that she has to stay at the home and sleep there in her bed. (She broke my heart at one point when she asked me if there was any way Dawson could stay overnight with her.) She needs protection. She needs to be with people she trusts.

By tonight, she was back to herself. The medication has already started working against the infection. It is obvious that I am going to have to really stay on the medical staff to make sure this infection gets taken care of completely. Although it's not true, I have convinced my grandma that none of the doctors, nurses, or staff are allowed to do anything without my authorization. She is comforted by that, for some reason.

So the timing of my move is impeccable, and I just don't believe it is a coincidence. I love my grandma and I want her to have a high quality of the remainder of her life. I am glad that I can be here for her.

Sunday Social (on Wednesday) ~ Kickin' it Old School

In honor of Back-to-School, and me moving back to my childhood hometown, I thought I would join in on the Sunday Social link up this week. The topic takes us all the way back to high school for Kickin' it Old School.

1. What were you like in Middle School/High School?

I was a normal girl trying to be in the popular group. I had been doing that all through elementary school and it carried on through high school. I was always trying to fit in. And, although I was accepted as one of the "populars", I always felt like I had to work at it. Looking back, I should have just accepted myself for who I was and been friends with the girls I am still friends with today. I have only kept in touch with the "populars" when we have class reunions. Otherwise, I really don't know what they are doing.

In Middle School (junior high), I was a cheerleader. In High School, I was Class President, on the pom pon squad, in Drama, and in National Honor Society.

2. What were your favorite past times?

In Middle School, I spent almost every Friday night at one of my friends' house. We watched old movies and baked, and listened to the radio. When we got in High School and got boyfriends, we stopped all that. My time was spent with my high school boyfriend, going to parties on the weekends. We were always doing what we shouldn't have been doing, although pretty harmless. There's not much to do in a small town.

3. What songs were you obsessed with?

This was the time of the 1980's hair bands. I loved anything by Poison, Warrant, Quiet Riot, Guns 'N Roses, Motley Crue, etc. I also LOVED the twin band Nelson. If it had an electric guitar solo, I was in love. Also, those '80s love ballads ... oh my.

4. What fashion statement do you look back on and cringe?

I would have to say parachute pants, and my Mork from Ork suspendered pants (although that was more like elementary school). Other than that, it was the '80s, baby, and fashion was at it's BEST! Tight-rolled jeans, jeans tucked into your layered socks, large fish-hook earrings, shoulder pads, real color blocking, jean skirts, flats, jean jackets. Ahhhh .....

5. Who was your celeb crush?

Gunnar Nelson from the band, Nelson. Tom Cruise was on the radar of every girl at that time. And I had a thing for John Elway (good Lord, what was I thinking ... can you say "horse teeth"??). And, I am old enough that I was in love with Kevin Costner and Mel Gibson. I'm still in love with Kevin Costner.

6. What were your favorite TV Shows/Movies?

I liked old black and white movies in Middle School. Any movies with the Brat Pack: Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Molly Ringwald, Mare Winningham, Anthony Michael Hall, Andrew McCarthy. A fave was certainly Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club. Tom Cruise was also big in All the Right Moves, Risky Business, and Top Gun (yowzer!) That was, obviously, before he became a freak. I also watched lots of TV. Beverly Hills 90210 and Melrose Place (although that was at the end of high school). We watched a lot of sitcoms: Roseanne, The Simpsons, lots of reruns on syndication like Good Times and Who's the Boss. Our favorites, though, were the primetime soaps like Dynasty, Dallas, Falcon Crest, and Knot's Landing. We were big family TV watchers.

Take yourself back to high school and link up at Some Days are Just: A Complete Waste of Makeup. Come on, you know you want to!

Nicole's Daybook

Outside my window... are the Amish buggies going by our house. We live in a town with a very active Amish community.

I am thinking... about my sweet friend Angela and the pain she is going through with the very sudden death of her precious daddy.

I am thankful ... for Rick who is back in Oklahoma finishing up the purging of our house; continuing to live in it despite the lack of furniture, television, or internet; working during the day and getting the house ready to sell at night; and living away from his family. I know it is hard on him, and I feel guilty that we are here living the life we love with all of the luxuries we have. I know that he is happy to provide these things to us. I just hope he knows how grateful we are, and how I do not take him and his love for granted.

I am wearing... sweat capris, a t-shirt, and tennis shoes. I rode my bike to the park with my mom and her friend this morning and walked three miles around the walking track. (And I am dying ... I couldn't admit it, though, because they are older than me!!)

I am planning...  to paint my kitchen cabinets next week. That is going to be a huge project!

I am creating... a pretty bulletin board to hang on my wall in the dining room above my desk..

I am going... to go visit my grandma this afternoon.

I am reading... The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd.

I am hoping... that our house sells quickly so that Rick can join us here full time. It stinks not having him here.

From the learning rooms...Well, we have officially started our full-time all-day schooling. Yesterday was a little rough, but I am confident we will transition into a good schedule. Eli, unfortunately, is going to take some time to get used to how we do things. We'll get it worked out, though. Dawson had a hard first couple of days back at public school, especially since he started in a whole new school in a new town and new state with all new kids. He was very bummed on Thursday and Friday. Yesterday, however, things were looking up. He made some much-needed connections and didn't have to sit by himself at lunch. He did tell me that he is doing really good academically, because homeschooling really helped him prepare. That made me happy that he found benefit in our time together.

Noticing that ... it feels GREAT to walk or ride my bike pretty much everywhere I want to go in our new town. I probably look like a dork on my bike, but I feel awesome!

From the kitchen... Tonight we are having fried crappie from my neighbor.

Around the house... are humming electronics. We now have internet, DirecTV, and Xbox Live back in operation.

One of my favorite things... is how every person you meet on the street waves at you, even if they don't know you.

A few plans for the rest of the week... Mostly this week we will just be getting used to our school routine. If Eli and Brynne earn their letters in the Secret Word (for not grumbling when doing school work), then I am going to take them to the Circus in a nearby town on Thursday night. Another neighbor (well, he owns the house and is doing some renovations before he rents it or sells it) gave us free tickets. This weekend I am planning to get some projects done around the house.

From my picture journal.

I'm missing this boy every day now that he's back at school, but I am so proud of him!

Menu Plan Monday

We are all moved in. Curtains are hung. Decorations are on the walls. Internet is working. We have DirectTV. Everybody is happy.

I am most happy that we can now start some NORMALCY, at least in our day-to-day lives. Of course, it won't be the same until we get our house sold in Oklahoma and Rick is here with us full time.

One thing I am happy to be back to doing is cooking regular dinner meals! Here is what we are having this week:

Monday ~ Kids to the Dairy Queen. I have to drive to Kansas City in the late afternoon to pick my mom up from my sister's. The kids can walk to Dairy Queen and stop by to see Papa.

Tuesday ~ Fried crappie (our new neighbor supplies the whole neighborhood with fresh crappie) and macaroni and cheese

Wednesday ~ Still Fend for Yourself (which mostly means pizza rolls for the kids, Hot Pockets for Dawson, and cereal for me). I've been doing this FFY for 12 years. I don't see why I should stop now!

Thursday ~ Spaghetti

Friday ~ Chicken and noodles with Amish egg noodles

Saturday ~ Calzones

Sunday ~ Weekly dinner at grandma and papa's. Man, I'm going to love Sundays!

So Much Fun!

I am back in Oklahoma for a few hours to pick up another load. But, i just had to report about how much FUN I am having, despite the hard work of moving!

When we arrived at the house, there were two ferns hanging off of hooks on my front porch. I figured they were something my mom had put there. Later, one of my best friends from school stopped by to greet us. She had been the one to bring the plants. I love small towns! We sat on the floor and talked for about 45 minutes, reminiscing. Rick told me later that he hasn't heard me laugh like that in years. It felt so good.

We got everything unloaded, beds put together, the kitchen unpacked, and things pretty much arranged. But, for me, getting our front porch arranged was a MUST! There was a place for a my porch swing, and all my plants, and my new address pillows my friend, Berry, made me. Oh, it looked so great ... and inviting! My aunt stopped by and told me that when she walked up to the porch, she just smiled. That made me happy. My sister thought I was so silly for decorating the porch first. But, I just wanted those who stop by to feel welcome and invited!

The kids were so excited to sleep in their new room. The dogs ... not so much. They were so stressed. They just panted and carried on and every time I walked outside they just cried and cried. They did finally manage to settle down when it was time for bed, and slept pretty good. As exhausted as they were from the trip, it was no wonder.

I am so excited about being in our new (er, really old) home, and living back "home". I thought about it yesterday ... I have spent 12 years here in Oklahoma trying to fit in, to find my place. And I just never could. I tried really, really hard. It certainly is just time to go back where I belong. I am praying that the adjustment for Rick and Dawson isn't too tough. They've been city boys their whole lives. This small-town-living will be something entirely new for them both.

Sorry, I didn't take any pictures. I'll try to take some in the next day or so and run over to my mom's and scam on her internet for a while to upload some.

I just wanted to stop in and say "hi".

Strike!

Brynne had her birthday party this morning in the midst of our packing and moving. We will be moving in the morning, so getting to spend one last time with her friends was invaluable!

I made bowling shirts for the kids ... girls in blue versus boys in black. And we made medals out of baking clay for 1st and 2nd place.

The girls won!!

Dawson and his best buddies had a great time too! Brynne thinks of these boys as her brothers. Actually, she says she is going to marry Antonio.

Brynne wanted a bowling pin cake and bowling ball cupcakes, so I sweated through making those for her yesterday. She said "they couldn't be any more perfect." That's all that really matters.

It was a really fun time!

A Seven Year Old's "Best Day Ever"

Wednesday was Brynne's 7th birthday. And, according to her, it was the "Best Day Ever"! You can't go wrong there!

This is how her day played out:

* She had donuts and chocolate milk for breakfast.

* She got to spend the morning at Big Splash with her best friend

* Dawson took her to Gamestop and let her pick out any game she wanted. She chose "Lord of the Rings" for the Xbox. (She is NOT a girly girl, as you can tell.)

* She got new flip flops that are "soooooo comfortable"!

* She had spaghetti for dinner.

* And she had cupcakes for dessert.

* She opened her gifts and got a new puppy necklace, two new pair of pj's, and lots of Lego Friends sets, which she had put together before she went to bed. (She went yesterday and spent all of her birthday money on two more sets, and put them together before the day was over.)

* She got lots of phone calls.

* And, according to her, the most exciting part of her day was legally giving up her car seat.

She is a big girl now!

Today is her birthday party. We're going bowling! It's girls versus boys. Let the epic battle begin.

Nicole's Daybook

Outside my window... it's a little hazy, which translates into "it's going to be stinking hot again today".

I am thinking... about about how much I have to do in 3 1/2 days, and I am overwhelmed.

I am thankful ... for my new pretty little home.

I am wearing... shorts and a t-shirt. I have to do lots of work today.

I am planning...  Brynne's birthday party on Friday.

I am creating... bowling t-shirts and a bowling pin cake.

I am going... to sort through the office closet and toys. Yucky day!

I am reading... nothing. In fact, I am taking back my books today. I just don't have the time with packing and moving.

I am hoping... that I don't lose my mind this week.

From the learning rooms...We are wrapping up the Olympics this week.

Noticing that ... I am not going to miss living in Owasso AT ALL.

From the kitchen... Nothing but easy, throw-together foods.

Around the house... are leaves EVERYWHERE! Our trees have gone dormant. Some have died. It looks like fall.

One of my favorite things... my restored hardwood floors. They turned out beautiful! Not bad for unprofessional wood restorers.

A few plans for the rest of the week... Dawson wraps up his last two days of work before we move. Today we are doing school and packing. Tomorrow is Brynne's 7th birthday, so we are going swimming at Blue Hole (and doing more packing). On Thursday it's more school work and more packing. I am also getting everything ready for Brynne's birthday party. Her party is at the bowling alley on Friday morning. Then we are loading up a truck on Friday afternoon and moving on Saturday.

From my picture journal.

No pictures today. I haven't downloaded any for at least a couple of weeks.

Lots of women Daybook. See what they have to say at The Simple Woman's Daybook.

Miraculous

That is the word to describe what has taken place in our extremely old, but new-to-us home. Exactly one week ago, we started the renovations to our house. Our goal was to do whatever was necessary to get it livable. In the purchased condition, it was not.

Now, the bones of the house are excellent! It has new siding, lots of new electrical with tons of outlets, new windows, good closets, original solid wood doors and hardware, a super-cold central air conditioning unit, and all appliances (except the refrigerator), including a washer and dryer. The house has three bedrooms and two baths with a good-sized kitchen with lots of cabinets and a nook, a living room, dining room, sitting room, a full unfinished basement with storage and laundry room, and a HUGE attic that will someday be renovated into a master suite.

But the condition of the house was HORRIBLE! The paint colors were: red, fuschia, purple, black, tan, gold, green, brown, periwinkle blue, gray, and many others. The hardwood floors are original to the house, but were covered in paint and carpet glue, loaded with staples, nails, and carpet tacking strips, and were beat to heck! The kitchen and bathroom had no flooring.

For us to even be able to move into the house, we had to paint EVERY surface! We painted all of the trim, wainscoting, doors, and other woodwork white. We painted the walls a nice, sunny yellow, and a couple of rooms a darker gold. The kitchen is painted green with black cabinets, the bathroom is painted green with a dark brown vanity. The bedrooms are tan and gray. EVERY room required two and, sometimes, three coats of paint. And the ceiling had to be touched up all over the house from various paint disasters.

We laid tile in the kitchen and bathroom. And we grouted it all ourselves. This was something I had never done before, so I was feeling pretty good about how great it looked! I even had to build a corner to a wall in the bathroom with spackle. I have certainly widened my repertoire!

And then there were the hardwood floors. We desperately wanted to salvage the floors because they are original to the house. They are four years away from being 100 years old! My dad rented some sanders and he and I sanded all 1500 square feet of the hardwood. It was a mess. We were a mess. It was hard, hard work. He used the big sanders and I crawled around on my knees with the edger for several hours. We just didn't know if we had done enough. I had a small panic attack, and even called Rick in tears. He talked me down from the ledge, and I got up first thing this morning to stain all of the floors.

I didn't want anyone else to have to deal with the stress of the floors, so I stained them all myself with a hand-held paintbrush. It was actually a really fun project. And they looked SO GOOD! I couldn't believe it. We chose a darker stain from Minwax called "Special Walnut". There are lots of imperfections in the floors from their 100 years, with knicks, cracks, and color variations. But, I really could not have been more pleased with how they turned out. My dad said they looked like an old schoolhouse floor. And since lots of school will be going on in those walls over the next several years, I thought it was very fitting.

This may sound so crazy, but all day I just felt like my floors were speaking to me. They were thanking me for cleaning them up, and conditioning them with new stain, and bringing them back to life instead of covering them or replacing them. I even felt that way about the colors we painted on the inside of the house. I would have never chosen that shade of yellow or green for the bathrooms and kitchen in our current house. The house just spoke those colors to me.

Anyway, this evening my mom, aunt, and I put on the first coat of polyurethane. Tomorrow morning we will apply the second coat, and the final coat will go on tomorrow night.

Then, the house is move-in ready.

It's a miracle. It's nothing short of a miracle.

I am so happy and so excited to start living in our new home. Our furniture, accessories, and new curtains will just light up that home. I can't wait!!!

We still have many, many projects to do after we get moved in. But, the necessary and hardest work is done! Thank you SO MUCH to my Dad, Mom, Aunt Sally, Monk, Dawson, Tonio, Rylee (for babysitting Eli and Brynne), and Rick (for supporting me and my dream). Without this group of people, I would still be painting trim.

I will be posting some collages of before and after pictures in the next couple of days, maybe even tomorrow.
