Halloween Night in Photos (too tired for words)

I Shouldn't

Last week I posted about a job assignment opportunity I had received. After much thought, discussion, and prayer, I have decided not to take the assignment. It's hard to pass up the money. But, this is just an impossible time of year for me to do any extra activities. For me, my family has to come first. And doing this job would cause me to have to make daily choices whether to work on the assignment or take care of very specific family needs. I don't want to have the stress of making those kinds of decisions, and then feel guilt regardless of which choice I make. Sometimes you have to give up something good to do what's best.

So, I have turned down the job. I am hoping that I will be contacted for another opportunity in the future, after the holidays, when my life slows considerably.

Two hours later ......

After I sent the e-mail turning down the job, I received a reply asking me if I would take the job if I didn't have to start until January. Since my busy season ends at the first of the year, I accepted. I should have a revised contract today. The great part is that I can still work on it a bit here and there until then, if I want. Should I or shouldn't I?

What did you do last night?

I put together two Halloween costumes. This is always entertaining because I do not sew. But I refuse to buy store-bought costumes. I probably end up spending twice as much. But hearing Dawson tell his friend last night about his "Ash" from "Pokemon" costume I made when he was seven made me remember why I put in the (typically last-minute) blood, sweat, and (usually) tears. He told her, "My mom can make some great costumes." This year involved lots of colored duck tape, t-shirts, buttons, felt, and hot glue. Check back soon for the great reveal!

Countdown to Canton

In one week, I will be starting a two-day shopping spree in Canton, Texas, at First Monday Trade Days with my mom and aunt. I am so excited! I have wanted to go do this for many years. When my husband suggested that I take a weekend away for myself, this is the first thing I thought of.

My mom and I love to shop, browse more than anything. We love a good bargain. The cool thing about this is that we will be away .. without kids .. for two nights .. eating good food .. shopping .. browsing through antique stores in nearby Forney .. and just getting rejuvenated. I am also looking so forward to spending some quality time with my mom. We rarely get to do this.

I cannot tell you how grateful I am to my husband for letting me do this, and for footing the bill.

Can't wait!

My Fitness Pal

The world has gotten so virtual, hasn't it? Back in the day, a fitness pal would have been someone I walked with every evening. My mom has a fitness pal. They ride their bikes to the park every day and then walk a few miles. I had fitness pals when I wanted to get up at 4:30 a.m. and drive 20 minutes into town to go to a class at the Y at 5:30 in the morning. I don't want to do that anymore. Rick and I aren't even fitness pals because I prefer to work out in the mornings and he prefers to work out in the evenings. I guess I do kind of have a walking fitness pal in Crusoe, but I spend more time pulling him away from things he needs to smell than engaging in encouraging conversation. What's a girl to do?

My friend Elizabeth had a beautiful baby girl a few months ago. She has four children ages 7 and under. As usually happens, she has put on a few pounds with each baby and now is ready to get rid of it for good. She has a goal to lose 15 pounds by Christmas. My weight loss goal is slightly smaller. I'd like to lose 8 pounds by Christmas so I can eat lots and lots and lots when we go to Florida.

Elizabeth is using the MyFitnessPal app on her iPhone. I don't have (nor want) an iPhone, but I do have a computer. So, I signed on to MyFitnessPal and "she" is going to help me lose those 8 pounds and get in shape. It is one of those basic websites that has you log the foods you eat, the exercise you do, and the water you drink. After inputting your information and desired pounds to lose, it tells you how many calories to eat each day, including the total number of carbs, fat, and protein grams.

But here is the part I really like. It tells you how many extra calories you have earned by exercising. For instance, this morning I did the elliptical for 10 minutes and earned 88 extra calories. I like that the initial total calories you can eat for the day do not assume a specific amount of exercise. Instead you earn extra calories. I like the idea of working ahead of time for a future reward. It makes me want to run back out later today and do 10 more minutes on the elliptical to earn another 88 calories so that I can have a bowl of cereal before I go to bed tonight. That's my favorite bedtime snack.

I have also devised a workout plan based on an anti-diabetes workout schedule (I do not have diabetes) I got out of Prevention magazine and a simple strength and stretching schedule I pulled out of another magazine.

I want to lose these pounds by Christmas, so I can thoroughly enjoy Christmas guilt-free, then do the schedule again to get myself ready for Spring. (I keep looking at those pictures of me from 2010 when we were in Hawaii. Wow! I looked good!)

Do you have any pre-holiday weight loss or fitness goals?

Should I, or Shouldn't I?

Okay, so I fell off my 31 Days of Enjoying the Busy Season posts. It most certainly has been a busy season, as is the custom around here, and I have enjoyed it much more than I typically do. I think that has everything to do with being intentional .... looking every day for those things that have made my day enjoyable.

As usually happens with me, I have been presented with a couple of opportunities during this busy season (that is only going to get busier over the next couple of months).

I was asked by our Interim Pastor to work for him a few hours a week doing some administrative duties. Our little church is going through some transition and everybody needs to pitch in where they can during this time. I have not given him an answer yet because I need to make sure that I can meet his true needs, and that it will fit into our very busy schedule without taking me away from my family. I have a couple of ideas that should allow me to do this job without much schedule-tweaking.

And then there is the big one. Last winter I had the opportunity to write a Course Description and Weekly Lesson plans for a Master's-level Business Law course for a Christian University. I loved doing it! I was contacted by the consulting firm a couple of days ago about writing another curriculum. The pay is almost three times the last assignment. I was so excited about getting to do this again!

But, when I got the contract I realized that it will require me to do much more than just plan the Course Description, Weekly Objectives and Weekly Lesson plans. It will also require me to plan the specific class assignments, lectures, and all. And I froze.

I don't know if I am smart enough to do this. I am not a college professor. And it's been a couple twenty years since I have been in a college class. I guarantee you today's students are smarter than me. I am a stay-at-home homeschooling mom. Sure, I have a law degree, and I practiced law for a few years. But that was a looooooong time ago!

My initial thought is that I don't want to do it because I am afraid that I will look like an idiot to the project manager of my assignment. I have lots of questions and need lots of guidance. And they are paying me, so I assume they want me to know what I am doing.

But then I think of Dawson. How many times has he refused to do something out of fear that someone will notice that he's not perfect at it the first time he tries it. What kind of example will I be if I turn down the job for that reason alone. But what kind of example will I be if I have him share in this journey with me and see me accomplish something, even when I feel inadequate.

I am kind of looking at this like a book deal. I am a writer who just has ideas. It's up to the editor to take my planning, my words, my ideas, and help me put them into a publishable product.

I am still thinking about this. It is the busy season and I will require some time from me. I want to talk with Rick about it some more, and the kids.

I want to do it. But I am afraid.

Nicole's Daybook

Outside my window... It's a nice, cool, breezy fall day.

I am thinking... about how overwhelmed I feel today, with so much going on and so many responsibilities.

I am thankful ... that I was contacted to write another Business Law course for a university and that this one pays really great!

I am wearing... skinny denim jeans, army green boots, a black t-shirt and army green/black/white sleeveless vest.

I am planning... a field trip for our Homeschool Co-op to learn about The Trail of Tears at the Cherokee Heritage Center, and the Co-op Couples Ugly Christmas Sweater Christmas party.

I am creating... a homemade Captain America costume for Eli for Halloween, and a cow costume for Kyndal.

I am going... to finish this post and then unload the dishwasher and do Brynne's spelling assignment with her.

I am reading...  Back to reading The Hunger Games.

I am hoping... that extra expenses (car, dental, etc.) stop adding up during this most expensive time of year! Guess I know what my salary from the course writing assignment is going toward.

From the learning rooms... First and foremost: Eli met his AR (Accelerated Reader) goal last week! We were so proud of him! After a fun birthday week for Dawson, and Fall Break, we are back at it today. I plan for us to work really, really hard for the next four weeks so we can take a relaxing Thanksgiving Break and feel good about it!

Noticing that ... peace still resides in our home right now.

From the kitchen... Gonna make some easy canned soup and grilled cheese sandwiches tonight. I just feel really behind.

Around the house... I have started going through closets and drawers doing some purging, pitching, donating, and organizing.

One of my favorite things... Are old things of my grandma's. I got some great jewelry from her house this weekend, some of her old flatware, two cast-iron skillets, some crystal snack sets (fun!) and her very old recipe box with all of her secret recipes. I am so glad no one else in my family is sentimental! I get some great stuff to pass down to my children.

A few plans for the rest of the week... After we go to Girls and Boys Club this evening, we will have a few slow days until the weekend. Then it's Halloween and Fall Festival fun!

From my picture journal.
Mmmmm .... a plate of pumpkin cookies and a cup of coffee.

31 Days of Enjoying the Busy Season {Days 18-24}

I'm back. I have been thoroughly enjoying a much needed break! I have specific things to post about, but need to find the time to do it.

This past weekend, the kids and I headed to Missouri to spend some time with my parents. We enjoyed some downtime, an 80th birthday party for my grandma, and I had a rare night out with just my mom and sister for dinner and a movie (Footloose ... Excellent!)

One way that I always feel when I come home from an extended stay at my parents' is INSPIRED.

My mom and dad have embraced their upcoming retirement years. They are only 62 and 60, but have decided to switch some things up so as to enjoy themselves more. They sold their big house in the country for a small house right on Main Street in the town where I grew up. They bought a small house in Florida. And they have their little lakehouse in the Ozarks. Life for them has gotten simple, and they are so much happier!

Being in a small town has it's advantages (and disadvantages). But it is kind of nice to walk to the bank, and Dollar General, and the post office, and the hair salon, and the grocery store, and the Dairy Queen. We did a lot of that. I didn't start my car from the day I got there until the day we left.

My mom has always taken good care of herself, so she inspires me to do the same. She eats healthy and exercises, always has and always will. She makes me want to be better at it.

My mom is also an excellent housekeeper. Her home is always clean and tidy and inviting. She always makes me want to come home and start decluttering, organizing, and purging. In fact, last night we got home around 5:30 p.m. and I immediately went upstairs and steam cleaned the carpets. I am ready to tackle some bedrooms and closets to get rid of some stuff! The less you have, the less you have to keep up with and clean!

Anyway. We had a great weekend that allowed me to recharge. I plan to hit a couple of things really hard between now and Thanksgiving: Eating well and exercising, going through all of our closets and dressers and the kids' toys, and blasting through lots of school work. Then I will feel so good about a relaxing Thanksgiving holiday.

Glad to be back!

Wednesday, October 19, 2011

We have had a lot to celebrate at our house the past couple of days: Dawson had his 15th birthday. Eli worked hard (even though he didn't have to) to meet his Accelerated Reader goal at school. Kyndal participated in her Tech campus' Breast Cancer Awareness program called "Pink Out Peoria". Brynne helped me foster a lost doggie until she could be returned to her owner.

We are on a much-needed break from the norm, spending  a few days at my mom and dad's. The goal is to hit school HARD when we return on Monday until Thanksgiving Break. We all have work to do. But in the meantime we are exhausted and are in need of a physical and mental break.

I forgot my camera cord, so I think I will suspend postings until I get back home next week.

In the meantime, when you think of me, please stop and say a prayer for the Goldstein Family. They live in our subdivision and on Monday their 4 year old son, Colby, was tragically killed when his grandfather accidentally ran over him in their driveway. The community is in shock and it makes you stop and consider all that you have.

Have a wonderful weekend. We'll be back next week.

Nicole's Daybook

Outside my window... The temperature between yesterday and today will be at least a 20 degree difference! It's Fall, y'all! A cold front came in and we are going to have highs in the 60's today. Yaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy!!!!!!!

I am thinking... about how 15 years ago today, I was going through one of the most difficult and scary days of my life. More on that later today.

I am thankful ... that Trixie's, aka Lilly's, family read on their neighborhood website that we had her and that they were reunited last night. I am glad we decided to pick her up and take care of her, because her family was gone all last weekend and there is no telling where she might have ended up.

I am wearing... WARM pj bottoms and a big hoodie.

I am planning... to spend the day playing Halo with Dawson. It was his birthday request.

I am creating... a surprise of pizza and friends for Dawson's birthday dinner tonight.

I am going... to veg out with my birthday boy all day today.

I am reading...  You know, I'm just not reading anything right now. Hoping to read some this weekend while relaxing at my parents'.

I am hoping... to have a great weekend back in my hometown this weekend. Looking forward to some relaxation.

From the learning rooms... Fall Break starts on Thursday, so this week is pretty laid back. We had a makeup day for Co-op yesterday, so no book school. Today is Dawson's birthday and for 'school' he is going to spend the day showing me all of the educational aspects of playing his xbox. Tomorrow, we are going to concentrate on writing and finishing our history read-a-loud. Then we are off for a few days! I am ready! Kyndal has an algebra test tomorrow. (Please pray for her!) And Eli has to read and test on four books before the end of the day tomorrow to reach his reading goal for the quarter. His teacher said this quarter's goal was completely arbitrary and no one really has to meet it. Eli REALLY, REALLY, REALLY wants to, though. He said, "I know I can do it!" So, we are trying our hardest.

Noticing that ... peace resides in our home right now.

From the kitchen... Pizza tonight!

Around the house... Are tubs of winter clothes ready to be put into dressers and closets.

One of my favorite things... Watching dvr'd shows with my husband after all the kids go to bed.

A few plans for the rest of the week... Heading to Missouri to attend my grandma's 80th birthday party. Rick and Dawson are staying home. Kyndal is going to her dad's. The little guys and I are spending the weekend in Missouri with my parents. This is Fall Break, so we have some time off. We have to come back on Sunday night, though, because Kyndal has Tech on Monday and Dawson has an appointment with the oral surgeon about the cyst under his tooth.

From my picture journal.

Our storybook character inspired pumpkin we created for Eli's school library. It's "Fly Guy" from the series by Tedd Arnold, Eli's favorite book series.

31 Days of Enjoying the Busy Season {Day 16}

This has been a great weekend. On Friday night, we attended a surprise 40th birthday party for our neighbor. It was nice to get dressed up and go somewhere with my husband for some grown-up time.

Yesterday, I cleaned house all day! It was so nice to get it done and regain some order. Then last night we had some friends over for dinner. We haven't invited anyone over to the house in the longest time. The kids played with their friends and had a great time and we had some awesome adult conversation.

Then today?? I have sat in this chair and watched all of the shows I have DVR'd, gotten caught up on some blogging, graded assignments and inputted grades, and relaxed.

Enjoyable.

31 Days of Enjoying the Busy Season {Day 15}

A day at the zoo can cure what ails you. Seeing a baby giraffe, snow leopard, and majestic lion up-close-and-personal is an astonishing thing. It's also kind of nice to spend the day with your kids and some of their friends.

31 Days of Enjoying the Busy Season {Day 14}

I can't even believe I am typing this. But, yet, I can.

On Thursday, I was driving home from picking up Eli from school and happened upon a pitiful Cocker Spaniel who was about to wander out into the busy road in the subdivision across the street from ours. Being worried that she was going to be run over, I stopped. She had on a collar, so I wanted to see if there was a tag to call the owner.

There was no tag.

But I just couldn't let her wander on further and further away from her home. She was obviously lost. All I could think about was how I would want someone to pick up one of our dogs should they get lost.

She jumped right in my car and was the sweetest thing. I took her home, made signs, and Dawson immediately went and posted them around the neighborhoods. I posted on our website all about her, with our telephone number. I e-mailed a friend in the neighborhood where she was found, and she posted it on their website. I sat and waited for the owner to call.

Brynne immediately took to her. Her and Dawson named her "Trixie".

And Trixie is still with us. We haven't heard from an owner. And she now acts as thought she belongs in our family. She is the sweetest dog! She is great with the kids, and the other dogs have taken to her as well. She appears to be potty trained. She minds. She fits in just fine.

Each day that she is here, I think there might be a little piece of us that hopes the owner never tries to find her.

What's one more, huh?

31 Days of Enjoying the Busy Season {Day 13}

Rick and I went to Eli's parent/teacher conference this evening. It was so great to hear his teacher talk about what a great student he is! She said that he is as normal and on par as the rest of the students. She is a wonderful teacher and it makes me so relieved to know that Eli is in her care every day.

When I picked him up from school today, he was carrying another award. It said, "Eli, I am so proud of you today! You showed bravery and courage in doing your project! Love and Hugs! Mrs. Walters"

Mrs. Walters is one of the other second grade teachers. Eli's class had a project where they were making sarcophoguses with paper mache. Eli does not like ooey-gooey things and said that he couldn't do the project. His teacher worked with him and he actually got his hands yucky and completed his own project! Mrs. Walters is across the hall and heard how loud it was in his classroom, so she came over to see if he wanted to come to her class where it was quiet. He told her that he wanted to stay and finish his project. She was so proud of him that she gave him the award.

Another great milestone (or two!).

31 Days of Enjoying the Busy Season {Day 12}

In my quest to ENJOY the first 31 days of our busy season, I did a quick inventory and saw that the intentional effort has been a good thing. Despite my quest, I have still been in a bit of a funk. Looking for the positive has helped, but it isn't enough.

I also wonder if anyone else around me is enjoying my busy season. In otherwords, are they enjoying ME in my busy season? Probably not.

I ask myself why I feel funkish. Why do I feel sluggish? Why do I feel under par? Why do I feel unmotiviated?

Much of it has to do with not taking care of myself. The unfortunate part is that in order to take care of myself I have to rise SUPER EARLY in the morning. I don't think that is unusual for women in this season of life. I have been getting up at 6:00 a.m. to start my day. But even at that, I can't fit in time to take a shower and get ready for the day. I tell myself I will do it a bit later, but then the day takes off. I might get a quick body shower. But, it's become all-too-easy to wad my hair up into a pony, throw on comfy clothes, skip the makeup, and move on.

I would imagine that those around me are tired of seeing me look this way. It's not me. It's the Saturday-Me that has now carried into every other day of the week. I am even less concerned about how I look when I am running errands or going to activities with other people.

So, I feel gross.

When I was in college, I did an oral report about Dressing Smart. We have a saying at our house that "if you can't be good at it, look good doing it." I tell my kids that if they dress smart, they will think smart. If we dress sluggish, we will feel sluggish. Even Dawson says that he feels like he does better in school if he showers in the morning before he gets started.

It's time to perk up and feel better about myself. What will follow will be a more enjoyable (and probably productive) day for myself and those around me.

This means I am going to have to rise even earlier, say 5:30 a.m., GADS! But, by doing this, I imagine I will get more accomplished earlier in the day so I can, say, take a little power nap in the afternoon before the evening shift starts? That's my goal. Yes, I'm one of those old women now who loves a 30 minute afternoon power nap.

Look Good ... Feel Good.

31 Days of Enjoying the Busy Season {Day 11}

I kind of got my wish this morning, about having a pj day ... Eli woke up with a red, goopy eye. It looks like a cold in his eye, as he has a bit of a stuffy nose, also. But figuring he would be promptly sent home from school, I just kept him home.

I enjoyed having him here. He mostly played, but did join us for our glue fossil project. We also were able to get his spelling words practiced and his reading done early in the day which let us have a relaxing afternoon instead of one packed with after-school work.

Nicole's Daybook

Outside my window... I sit with my coffee, my dog, and the beautiful morning. I can hear geese honking in the distance, and some lingering crickets. And is that the sound of chipmunks??

I am thinking... about how I would love to have a true pj day where we did absolutely nothing but lay on the couch and rest all day.

I am thankful ... that a small storm seems to have passed, the clouds have cleared a bit, and some sunshine is peeking through (metaphorically speaking).

I am wearing... black nylon pants, tennis shoes, and my "Queen Mom" t-shirt with a zip-up hoodie tied around my waist.

I am planning... outfits for a family photo.

I am creating... A fun Halloween t-shirt (or two or three), thanks to this post.

I am going... to seriously make sure I get everything done early today so that I can get in my pjs and into my favorite chair by 7:00 p.m. to start watching my favorite night of t.v. shows!

I am reading...  The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (Geez ... I haven't been reading at all), The Captain's Dog by Roland Smith, (Dawson's read-a-loud), lots of books each day with Eli and Brynne, 1 John (as part of the Good Morning Girls Bible study) and getting ready to start The Borrowers with Brynne because we are going to see the play at the beginning of next month.

I am hoping... that a certain fellow at Rick's job gets put in his place so that he doesn't make the whole company (primarily Rick) miserable for the next year until he retires.

From the learning rooms... This week things are changed up a bit because of a free field trip to the Tulsa Geoscience Center that popped up. Brynne is learning about fossils and Dawson is taking a break from Biology to learn about solar energy. Brynne is also doing a unit on Columbus Day this week, which she is really loving so far. She is also way into learning all 51 states and the Fifty Nifty song, so I am going to have to get it on cd for her. Eli is pushing ahead. We will be having an emphasis on reading in the next two weeks because he needs to read about five books and test on them to meet his quarterly reading goal. He can do it! And, Kyndal has decided that maybe she should start doing her homework and taking school seriously, now that she knows I am serious about her being grounded. She does do schoolwork better when she is doing it with a friend, so I have agreed that her one friend can come over in the afternoons so they can do their homework together. Cheaper than a tutor.

Noticing that ... I am a control freak and have extreme trust issues.

From the kitchen... I think we'll just do some hot dogs and brats tonight. Keep it simple.

Around the house... The usual piles of school projects. That is neverending and just a part of our life now. We call it "home decor".

One of my favorite things... Sunday afternoon naps. I've been making a point of having them.

A few plans for the rest of the week... It's a little busy this week. Today is our one day with nothing going on (other than Eli's bowling date with daddy). Tomorrow, Dawson and I have early eye appointments and then we are headed to Tulsa for the day. Dawson will have youth in the evening. Thursday we are home, but I have to get everything ready for the sub for my Continent Crossers class and deliver it to her in the evening. On Friday, we are going to the zoo with Eli's class. That night we have a surprise 40th birthday party to attend for our neighbor (he doesn't read this). And on Saturday we have invited some friends over for dinner. We'll have church on Sunday and then I'm taking that nap!!!

From my picture journal.

I saw this on the Five J's blog yesterday and haven't been able to get my mind off of it.

31 Days of Enjoying the Busy Season {Day 10}

It is so easy to get stressed, especially this time of year. Attitudes, unexpected plan changes, weather, etc., can all play a part.

But, we have control over how we respond to the craziness of our days. Today I just let the day be what the day was going to be. It's not that I had that much control over it anyway.

Because of weather we had to make a change to our homeschool picture location. No big deal. Sure, we had to wait a bit. But, who cares? No, not as much school got done as we had planned today. But, who cares? There's always tomorrow.

While working on Brynne's Columbus Day activities, she got excited about some of her work pages and wanted to spend more time on them. In fact, she veered off into drawing a map of the United States and drawing the states she knew. I was so impressed with how many she remembered and how she knew generally where they belonged. She was excited, so I didn't see the need to move onto something else until she was ready.

We were using rye bread (only one slice out of a whole loaf) in a fossil demonstration. Seeing that gave me a craving for Patty Melts. I had a meal planned, with all of the ingredients purchased and ready to be used. I had to make a quick trip to the store to get what we needed for the patty melts. But, no big deal.

It rained a bunch this morning, so the backyard was a mud pit. I had to take the dogs out front to potty all day, which meant I had to be out there with them so they didn't get out into the street. It was time consuming, but that's fine. It saved me from cleaning up muddy floors.

Dawson and Brynne should have been cramming in a little bit of schoolwork between lunch and Dawson's guitar lessons. But they wanted to do P.E. for a while instead. Why not?

Kyndal is grounded and has been having a difficult time understanding the 2011 definition of "grounded". She has pushed and pushed, a little every day. Today she wanted to know if her and her friend could work together on their Cosmo project. That question would typically make my blood pressure rise to an unhealthy level. But today I said, "Fine. But you are doing it here." They are currently actually working on our back patio.

ALL of these things could have thrown me into a tizzy today. In fact, just one of them really could have. But I decided to just let our day happen and go with it.

31 Days of Enjoying the Busy Season {Day 8}

This morning Brynne was outside first thing riding her little, tiny bike. The tires are flat and it's way too small for her. But, she usually rides her scooter, so we haven't been on the hunt for a new bike. Eli has a little, tiny bike, too. And he is such an indoorsman that, again, we haven't been too wound up to get him a bigger bike.

But this morning, when Rick saw Brynne out in the driveway, he said, "I'm going to town to get the kids new bikes." And that's exactly what he did. Brynne tagged along to help out.

They came home with two new 18" bikes, and new helmets with dingy bike bells.

Brynne was elated! She rode her bike all day! She was bummed that her new helmet was too big (she already has one that fits well anyway), so she has to take the bell back because it came with the helmet. But she was all about riding that bike! She wants to take the training wheels off and learn to ride. Rick and her will be working on that soon.

Eli, on the other hand, could not understand why in the world Rick thought he needed a new bike. But the helmet and bell? Oh, he was excited!!! He did get on his bike a few times throughout the day, but it was primarily to ring his bell. I told Rick that maybe he should have just bought Eli a video game about riding a bike.

I enjoyed these new bikes today as much as the kids. They are shiny and bright .. and so are the kids' smiles.

31 Days of Enjoying the Busy Season {Day 7}

(This is yesterday's post.)

I love to see my children supporting each other. At Eli's walk-a-thon, he had a goal of walking 20 laps. They are 20 loooooonnnngggg laps!

Eli started walking at 1:00 p.m. and never stopped, except to grab a drink as he went by, until 3:00 p.m.

Every few laps Dawson and/or I would get up and walk with him. But he would then tell us to go sit back down. I think he wanted to accomplish it all on his own. Most kids walked with a buddy or two. But Eli was on a solo mission.

Brynne hooked up with some of her former school buddies and walked with them.

After Lap 18, Eli was tired and wanted to quit. Dawson jumped up and said, "Come on. We'll do the last two laps with you." He even went and found Brynne who was sitting with her friends enjoying a popcicle. He was tired and it was hard. But, we finished the last two laps with him.

And he accomplished his 20 lap goal.

31 Days of Enjoying the Busy Season {Day 5}

Obviously, my theory of how to enjoy a busy season is to make it even more busy! Today I took Dawson, Eli, and Brynne to Oklahoma's Largest Classroom at the Tulsa State Fair.

We started out in the OLC building doing all kinds of Science-y things.

Then we moved onto the petting barn and birthing center. Oh, the babies are so cute!!! We were hoping to see some kids (as in goats) or piglets being born, but no such luck. Instead, Dawson had some fun with the ultra large ostrich and Brynne spent some time feeding the goats. Eli doesn't do 'dirty and stinky', so he just hung back and observed from a distance.

Our next stop was an arena where cattle dogs (mostly Border Collies) were competing, herding three cows. It was so fun to watch! They are some disciplined and smart animals! We were cracked up to be surrounded by so many dogs that looked like Crusoe.

We walked over to the armory, just to see it. It was secured shut, but we found a broken window and took a photo in cognito. Look at those solid stone walls!

After stopping to have some pizza, lemonade, and sweet treats, we took our spot on the bleachers to watch the dog trick show. The kids loved it!! It was very entertaining. They are now convinced they can teach Crusoe to do those tricks.

Thankfully, it's Wednesday night, and I don't cook. Instead, I'll be retiring to the couch early for a glass of wine and some relaxation. I have currently retired to the back patio where I am about to fall asleep, sitting with the dogs and enjoying the wonderful cool breeze.

31 Days of Enjoying the Busy Season {Day 4}

Today I let the pumpkin patch overcharge me for pumpkins, but didn't mind because it's for missions.

Each of the kids (who were present) picked out the perfect pumpkins.

And I found mine.

Scarecrows were spotted.

We chose the smallest and ugliest pumpkin so that it wouldn't be left all alone.

And Dawson found the most rotten pumpkin.

As if we didn't get enough pumpkins, we stopped by Aldi to pick up a couple more (because they were cheap).

I'll be honest. I was in a small funk today. So this little trip certainly helped my mood!
